Habits are not necessarily learned ...but they are difficult to unlearn.
That may appear rather contradictory ...to think we have to unlearn something we have not learned. But, habits are of all sorts & some of them are just followed by convenience ...what may appear easy, or what makes us feel good because it is what our peer group is doing.
So, to change the pattern of what we are used to ...we often need a reason to change, that overrides the convenience or whatever advantage we feel we have by maintaining the habit. And if we feel the habit is not detrimental, then we often feel "Why bother."
Often we have to learn of a reason to compel us to change. I guess I misspoke, as we don't need to necessarily unlearn ...but to learn.
I guess this is sort of semantics, yet learning often utilizes repetition ...and repeated behavior that we do without much thought, is a habit.
Or it could be said there is much thought ...as it could be all that we think about. So, it could be said that a habit doesn't take much deep thought ...but is rather constant thinking.
I don't know where I was going with this point ...I have a habit of doing that. Let me take a while to regroup.
I guess it could be similar to science distinguishing between instincts and learned behavior ...or intuition differing from sound reasoning. Many of us do not have very much control over our emotions ...and it's almost like we pre-program our emotions to perform like reflexes. Unlike reflexes though, most often there has been a perception placed, or an assigned value.
And we either assign a value or accept a perception that someone else shares with us ...or we come to our own conclusion.
I contend that it is not healthy to do either ...at least, in absolute terms. I don't believe we should readily accept everything we read or hear, nor do we possess everything we need to come to our own conclusions. We need more than to isolate either one as totally sufficient.
What is comes down to ...is value. Our values direct our thoughts, and our thoughts influence our behavior. Out of that is spawned the seedbed prepared for our thoughts to grow, to audition our actions, and to form our character.
We aren't always good at things we desire to be good at ...but we usually will be much better than if we desired it not at all.
And good is a relative term ...not that all my relatives were good, so that I learned well. But, I don't consider myself good either ...so, I just attempt to follow the One only who is.
That is my desire, so I will never give up trying. And I know He will never give up on me.
